The energy and mining cluster is the oldest. The Denver area has been the corporate home of upstream operators, mining majors, and the regulatory-consulting industry that serves both for decades. Newmont, Coeur, and the long tail of mid-cap operators carry geological libraries that go back to the 1970s, BLM and Forest Service permit files for every active claim, NEPA documentation that drives every new project, and EPA records that determine which legacy sites need ongoing attention. The corpus size is large, the scan quality is uneven, and the metadata that matters (claim block, property ID, formation, permit number, EPA site ID) is often only in the document titles.
The aerospace cluster runs from Boulder down through Littleton and out to Aurora and Colorado Springs. Lockheed Martin Space is the anchor with the Orion crew vehicle and the broader Artemis-supporting infrastructure. Ball Aerospace ships instruments and small satellites. Raytheon operates the Aurora campus. United Launch Alliance HQ is in Centennial. Most of the document load here is ITAR-controlled and the security boundary drives the architecture decisions more than the model choice does.
Healthcare is the third and growing pillar. DaVita is the largest dialysis operator in the country and headquartered downtown, running clinical protocols and payer contracts across 2,800 facilities. Evolent Health builds value-based-care infrastructure with contract libraries that have to be queryable across hundreds of provider relationships. Centura, HealthONE, and SCL Health each run their own clinical-policy and payer-contract corpora. The change cadence on these documents (quarterly clinical updates, annual contract renegotiations, monthly CMS rule changes) is the binding constraint on retrieval design.
Outdoor industry, fintech, and electronics distribution are the fourth axis. Vail Resorts, Ibotta, and Arrow Electronics each run document libraries that benefit from retrieval but at much lower regulatory load than the first three. The pipelines look more like Austin SaaS deployments but with the operational seriousness of a Denver enterprise buyer.

Denver is not a one-industry town and the RAG architecture has to reflect that. An aerospace deployment for Lockheed Martin Space looks fundamentally different from a healthcare deployment for DaVita, which looks different again from a geological retrieval system for a Newmont property. The security model, the document types, the embedding choice, the inference environment, and the audit requirements all diverge. We do not run a single playbook here.
The federal-permitting overlay is heavier on Front Range business than most metros. BLM controls land use across the western US and the Lakewood office handles a substantial share of national permitting activity. EPA Region 8 operates from Denver and oversees environmental compliance for the Mountain West. NRC handles nuclear-waste documentation for the WIPP repository and the legacy sites scattered across Colorado, New Mexico, and Wyoming. A retrieval system over the permit-and-compliance corpus is one of the highest-ROI builds we see because the alternative is a regulatory affairs team with a deadline.
The healthcare and fintech clusters look more like other US markets but with Denver-specific scale. DaVita is the clearest example: a single company running 2,800 facilities with a clinical-protocol corpus that has to stay current. Ibotta runs merchant agreements at consumer-app scale. Zayo Group built a fiber-network business on a documentation corpus that few outside the telecom space appreciate.
